On average, business owners in various industries can lose between 2-5% in credit card processing fees for every transaction they make.
Cash discount programs have been around for years, but they are significantly increasing in popularity and are a great way for business owners to recoup the majority of the processing fees they are used to paying.
For example, gas stations have implemented this program on their prices for over 15 years. You may have noticed the cost of gas will be less money when you pay with cash versus paying with a credit card which uses the listed price.
A cash discount program allows business owners to offer a price deduction on goods or services to motivate customers to pay with cash. However, if they choose to pay by credit card, the business can pass along the cost of acceptance to the customers. The customer is then given a choice to pay with cash and save or incur the cost of acceptance themselves.
In other words, it is a method of implementing a service fee to all customers, while giving a discount to those who pay with cash. Our proprietary technology automatically adjusts the pricing and keeps you within the guidelines of Visa, MasterCard, and processor regulations.
Credit card processing has become increasingly expensive for business owners, especially small business owners, so many are looking for any and all ways to cut their costs while still being able to offer card acceptance to their customers. By accepting credit cards as a form of payment, most businesses incur fees of 2-5% on every transaction, therefore significantly limiting their profits.
As a result, many small business owners are looking for solutions to recoup the majority of these lost profits. An answer to this dilemma was solved back in 2011 when the “cash discount” program was federally authorized in all 50 states. Since then, the program has been increasing in popularity and has been saving merchants hundreds, if not thousands of dollars each month. However, there has been some confusion as to what exactly a cash discount program is and how it differs from a surcharge.
While there are definite similarities between a cash discount program and a surcharge program, there are also a few distinct differences that are very important for merchants to know.
Offering a cash discount program is legal in all 50 states. The legality of passing fees to customers is covered by the Durbin Amendment as part of the Financial Reform Act. As long as the program is properly disclosed to the customer, it is a great way for merchants to save the good majority of their credit card processing fees, which, in most cases, can add up to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars each month.
A cash discount program passes the cost of acceptance back to customers who choose to pay with a credit or debit card. For those who decide to pay by cash, it provides a DISCOUNT of that same percentage on the transaction. Customers who choose to pay with a card will pay the marked amount because the processing cost is built into the cost of the item. This allows the business owner to recoup the full amount of the transaction and not incur any credit card processing fees.
For example, a transaction that normally costs $50.00 will now be automatically updated to include a fee of 3.75%, or $1.88. If a customer decides to pay with a credit card, they will pay $51.88 ($50.00 + the fee of $1.88). If they decide to pay by cash, they will receive an instant “cash discount” of 3.75%, bringing the transaction back to the original $50.00.
True cash discount programs will automatically determine the service fee or discount amount depending on the payment type and must present a clear receipt detailing the service fee or cash discount amount. The merchant must also display proper signage at the point of entry and at their register informing their customers they are implementing a cash discount program. If done correctly, merchants set up on a cash discount program can save up to 100% of their monthly processing fees!
Our Cash Discount Program offers a solution to rid yourself of those annoying merchant service fees you receive when you process a transaction with a credit card. This can be done by charging a service fee to all your customers but gives a discount to those who choose to pay with cash.
This solution rewards your customers who pay in cash with a 3.75% discount.
When a sale is made, your processing fees are included and a small service fee is passed onto customers who pay with credit cards.
Point-of-purchase pricing and discount signage clearly spell out the process to customers.
With the Cash Discount program, you can bring your processing fees close to $0 at the end of the month.
